Muscle fibers are composed of myofibrils which are composed of sarcomeres linked in series. The striations of skeletal muscle are created by the organization of actin and myosin filaments resulting in the banding pattern of myofibrils.
Muscles are composed of long bundles of myocytes or muscle fibers. Myocytes contain thousands of myofibrils. Each myofibril is composed of numerous sarcomeres, the functional contracile region of a striated muscle.
Muscle fibers are in turn composed of myofibrils. The myofibrils are composed of actin and myosin filaments called myofilaments, repeated in units called sarcomeres, which are the basic functional, contractile units of the muscle fiber necessary for muscle contraction. [5] .
