A magnetorquer or magnetic torquer (also known as a torque rod) is a satellite system for attitude control, detumbling, and stabilization built from electromagnetic coils. The magnetorquer creates a magnetic dipole that interfaces with an ambient magnetic field, usually Earth's, so that the counter-forces produced provide useful torque.
The combination of the panhard rod and the torque tube allows the easy implementation of soft coil springs in the rear to give good ride quality. In addition to transmitting the traction forces, the torque tube is hollow and contains the rotating driveshaft.
Unlike axial loads which produce a uniform, or average, stress over the cross section of the object, a torque creates a distribution of stress over the cross section. To keep things simple, we're going to focus on structures with a circular cross section, often called rods or shafts.

The shafts are typically made from steel or aluminum with a solid or hollow construction. Most torque rods will be straight, but on certain suspensions, they may be purposely curved to allow clearance to suspension components.
