A magnetorquer or magnetic torquer (also known as a torque rod) is a satellite system for attitude control, detumbling, and stabilization built from electromagnetic coils. The magnetorquer creates a magnetic dipole that interfaces with an ambient magnetic field, usually Earth's , so that the counter-forces produced provide useful torque .
Torque has both magnitude and direction. (a) A counterclockwise torque is produced by a force \(\vec{F}\) acting at a distance r from the hinges (the pivot point). (b) A smaller counterclockwise torque is produced when a smaller force \(\vec{F}′\) acts at the same distance r from the hinges.
To keep things simple, we're going to focus on structures with a circular cross section, often called rods or shafts. When a torque is applied to the structure, it will twist along the long axis of the rod, and its cross section remains circular.
21 Μαΐ 2023 · A small marble is attached to the end of a thin rigid rod with an equal mass, whose other end is held fixed at the origin. The rod starts at rest in the \(x-y\) plane, and makes an angle \(\theta\) up from the \(x\)-axis, as shown in the diagram.
In this section, we define torque and make an argument for the equation for calculating torque for a rigid body with fixed-axis rotation. Defining Torque So far we have defined many variables that are rotational equivalents to their translational counterparts.
So we find that torque will have units of force times length. Let's examine a simple example of a point mass attached to a massless rod of length \(r\) as shown in Figure 7.5.1. The rod is attached at a pivot on the opposite end of the mass. Figure 7.5.1: Torque on a Point Mass
