The ventilator circuit is used to deliver gas from a positive pressure ventilator to the patient. It is typically comprised of tubing that is 22 mm of inside diameter, but can be smaller for neonatal and pediatric circuits.

This thing can be schematically represented as a single piece of tubing along which a humidification apparatus and a ventilated patient are mounted. One may be able to describe the circuit as an “open” circuit because there is no reservoir for gas accumulation and there is no rebreathing.
The ventilator circuit accommodates ancillary components such as heaters, humidifiers, filters, suction catheters, and therapeutic aerosol generators like nebulizers and inhalers. Collectively, these elements ensure effective ventilation and patient comfort during mechanical respiratory support. 2
A mechanical ventilator is an automatic machine designed to provide all or part of the work the body must do to move gas into and out of the lungs. The act of moving air into and out of the lungs is called breathing, or, more formally, ventilation.
A ventilator delivers a set volume of gas to a patient based on volume, pressure, or flow as set by the operator. It does this by generating a flow of gas into the breathing circuit and this flow is determined by settings as discussed below. Physics of Mechanical Ventilators.
