It defines anthropology as the “study of human nature, human society, human language, and the human past,” and argues that its approach is distinct from other disciplines because it is “holistic, comparative, field based, and evolutionary” (p. 3).
Although definitions of science in anthropology may be incongruous, there does seem to be a general agreement that at least two opposing modes of thought are present in anthropology: one focusing on logical, reasoned argumentation; the other on more inventive, insightful exploration (e.g., Boyer 2003; see also Wolf 1964:1–3).
