In DNA, cytosine pairs with guanine through three hydrogen bonds, forming a stable base pair. The sequence of these base pairs along the DNA strand encodes genetic information. During DNA replication, the complementary base pairing ensures faithful copying of the genetic material.
The numerous DNA cytosine-modifying enzymes each play important physiologic roles in generating genomic variety. On its face, cytosine deamination is antagonistic to the primary function of DNA as a stable reservoir of information.
Cytosine’s complementary base in the DNA molecule is guanine. Cytidine is a structural subunit of ribonucleic acid that consists of cytosine and the sugar ribose. Cytidine triphosphate (CTP), an ester of cytidine and triphosphoric acid, is the substance utilized in the cells to introduce cytidylic acid units into ribonucleic acids.

Complementary base pairing enables us to predict the connectivity of two DNA molecules, as DNA is composed of the four nucleotides adenine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G), and cytosine (C) of which adenine always binds to thymine and guanine always binds to cytosine.
