20 Ιουν 2017 · Simply put, enculturation is how we attain our cultural values and understand the norms of our culture. It’s an important process because if we want to be a successful member of society, we need to understand (and abide by) cultural norms.
While many races and ethnicities reside in the same society, their culture is abated, or melted and conformed by dominant society. However, recent psychologists and sociologist have challenged the notion of “the melting pot.”
Enculturation is the process where the culture that is currently established teaches an individual the accepted norms and values of the culture or society where the individual lives. The individual can become an accepted member and fulfill the needed functions and roles of the group.

Enculturation is the process whereby individuals learn their group’s culture through experience, observation, and instruction. To learn is to develop the knowledge and skills needed to participate in the communal, cultural practices and to become a fully functioning member of the community.
Enculturation describes that our affective and cognitive functions, including their underlying neural correlates, are adopted to the respective cultural context and thus encultured—one can thus speak of “enculturation” of the brain.
