Ethanol (also called ethyl alcohol, grain alcohol, drinking alcohol, or simply alcohol) is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH 3 CH 2 OH. It is an alcohol , with its formula also written as C 2 H 5 OH , C 2 H 6 O or EtOH, where Et stands for ethyl .
In the U.S., almost all ethanol is made from the starch of a type of corn known as “Yellow Dent” or “field corn.” It’s an economical feedstock that can be produced in abundance — and it’s very different from the edible sweet corn you have at a picnic. That variety represents only 1% of the annual U.S. corn crop.
