This lesson helps 5th graders explore three specific substances – gravel, sodium chloride, and diatomaceous earth – and how the physical properties of the substances can change when a mixture is made of the substance and water.
A mixture contains two or more distinct chemical substances. The components of a mixture interact physically, but no chemical reaction takes place. There is no rearrangement of valence in any of the substances involved in the mixture.
Pure substances mix to form mechanical mixtures or solutions. In a solution, the particles of the pure substances are mixed evenly so that neither original substance is visible.
