Twice a month, when the Earth, Sun, and Moon line up, their gravitational power combines to make exceptionally high tides, called spring tides, as well as very low tides where the water has been displaced. When the Sun is at a right angle to the Moon, moderate tides, called neap tides, result.
A spring tide—popularly known as a "King Tide"—refers to the 'springing forth' of the tide during new and full moon. A neap tide—seven days after a spring tide—refers to a period of moderate tides when the sun and moon are at right angles to each other.
What is a neap tide? When the sun and moons are at right angles to each other, there is least gravitational pull, meaning the tidal range is at its lowest. The neap tide occurs 7 days after the spring tide. A neap tide is where the sun and moon are at their least aligned point. Not to scale.
Neap tides are tides that have the smallest tidal range, and they occur when the Earth, the Moon, and the Sun form a 90 o angle (Figure below). They occur exactly halfway between the spring tides, when the Moon is at first or last quarter.
One week later, when the sun and moon are at right angles to each other, the solar tide partially cancels out the lunar tide and produces moderate tides known as neap tides. During each lunar month, two sets of spring and two sets of neap tides occur (Sumich, J.L., 1996).
