- Lesson 3 Earth's Tides Flashcards
A ___ tide occurs when the sun is at right angles to te line between Earth and the moon. neap Differences in the moon's and sun's pull on different sides of the Earth cause ___.
Study with Quizlet and memorize flashcards containing terms like The motion of the----- around the earth is related to tides., The daily rotation of -----is also related to tides., During a---- tide, the water level is higher than the average sea level. and more.
When the sun and moon form a 90 degree angle with the Earth, neap tides occur. During these tides, high tide is lower and low tide is higher compared to spring tides.
What are spring and neap tides? Ocean tides on Earth are controlled by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun. Tides are affected by the annual and monthly orbits of these bodies. Spring and neap tides are connected to the phases of the moon. Spring tides occur all year round, twice each lunar month.
These tides are called “spring tides” and they occur during the full moon and the new moon. The weakest tides, called “neap tides,” occur during quarter moons. Neap tides are the result of the gravitational forces of the moon and the sun being perpendicular to each other in regards to the earth’s position.
This three-part lesson plan will provide information about tides, the relationships between tides and water levels, and the impacts that high water levels can have on coastal communities. The first part of the lesson will explain how the moon and sun’s gravitational pull on the Earth create tides.
