1 Οκτ 2024 · While the interiors of the plates are presumed to remain essentially undeformed, plate boundaries are the sites of many of the principal processes that shape the terrestrial surface, including earthquakes, volcanism, and orogeny (that is, formation of mountain ranges).
About 80% of earthquakes occur where plates are pushed together, called convergent boundaries. Another form of convergent boundary is a collision where two continental plates meet head-on. Since neither plate is stronger than the other, they crumple and are pushed up.
Plate tectonics involves the movement and interaction of Earth's crustal plates, leading to geological changes. Divergent boundaries create new crust, while convergent boundaries, where plates collide, can form mountains, island arcs, earthquakes, and volcanoes.
