The proper rotational axis is the symmetry element associated with the proper rotation operation. It’s Schoenflies symbol is C n, whereby n is called the order of the rotational axis. A proper rotational operation has the symbol C n m, whereby m counts the number of times the operation
31 Μαΐ 2016 · In a rotation, the line of points that stay in the same place constitute a symmetry axis; in a reflection the points that remain unchanged make up a plane of symmetry. The symmetry of a molecule or ion can be described in terms of the complete collection of symmetry operations it possesses.
The structural symmetry of every molecule is summarized by its point group, which is the set of all transformations with respect to a fixed point in space that keep the molecule invariant. Each operation of a point group is either a proper or an improper rotation.
Symmetry axis: an axis around which a rotation by results in a molecule indistinguishable from the original. This is also called an n-fold rotational axis and abbreviated C n. Examples are the C 2 axis in water and the C 3 axis in ammonia.
The definition of a symmetry rotation axis of order n is a line in space about which an object may be rotated anticlockwise by 360°/ n such that its initial and final positions are indistinguishable. To illustrate this point consider the benzene molecule shown below:
Symmetry operators can transform the coordinates of one molecule to those of another. This section explains the form of these symmetry operators for pure rotational symmetry.
If a molecule has rotational symmetry C , rotation by. n. 2 /n = 360°/n brings the object into an equivalent position. The value of n is the order of an n‐fold rotation. If the molecule has one or more rotational axes, the one with the highest value of n is the principal axis of rotation. S uccessi ve C c l ock wi se rot ati ons of a pl anar MX.
