Socialization, on the other hand, refers to those primary social experiences that are inherent to intergenerational social relationships. From this perspective, socialization precedes all education. Parsons (1964) of course distinguished between primary and secondary socialization.
In this chapter, socialization is defined with reference to contextual affordances, that is, supports and opportunities that facilitate the development of children's school-based competencies.
