17 Οκτ 2024 · Sound, a mechanical disturbance from a state of equilibrium that propagates through an elastic material medium. A purely subjective, but unduly restrictive, definition of sound is also possible, as that which is perceived by the ear. Learn more about the properties and types of sound in this article.

Sound is a disturbance of matter (a pressure wave) that is transmitted from its source outward. Hearing is the perception of sound. Sound can be modeled in terms of pressure or in terms of …
23 Ιουλ 2023 · Water waves shake energy over the surface of the sea, while sound waves thump energy through the body of the air. Sound waves are compression waves. They're also called longitudinal waves because the air vibrates along the same direction as the wave travels.
Sound is a longitudinal, mechanical wave. Sound can travel through any medium, but it cannot travel through a vacuum. There is no sound in outer space. Sound is a variation in pressure. A region of increased pressure on a sound wave is called a compression (or condensation).
As a longitudinal wave, sound is a rapid variation in pressure that propagates. Regions of above normal pressure (regions under compression) are called compressions or condensations . Regions of below normal pressure (regions under tension) are called rarefactions or dilations .
Properties of Sound Waves. Sound is a wave. More specifically, sound is defined to be a disturbance of matter that is transmitted from its source outward. A disturbance is anything that is moved from its state of equilibrium. Some sound waves can be characterized as periodic waves, which means that the atoms that make up the matter experience ...
