proposes that student engagement is “the time and energy students devote to educationally sound activities inside and outside of the classroom” (p. 25). Shulman (2002) suggests, “Learning begins with student engagement, which in turn leads to knowledge and understanding” (p. 38).
They define engagement as the frequency with which students participate in activities that represent effec-tive educational practices, and conceive of it as a pattern of involvement in a variety of activities and interactions both in and out of the classroom and throughout a student’s college career.
