23 Ιαν 2009 · The poverty thresholds are the original version of the federal poverty measure. They are updated each year by the Census Bureau (although they were originally developed by Mollie Orshansky of the Social Security Administration).
Poverty guidelines since 1982 for the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia can be calculated by addition using the figures shown below.

Data on the poverty population and on family and personal income are collected in the Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplement (CPS ASEC), formerly known as the March Supplement.
Some programs use the poverty guidelines as only one of several eligibility criteria, or use a modification of the guidelines. For example, the eligibility level may be set at 130% or 185% of the guidelines rather than 100%.
