A supermassive black hole (SMBH) is an extremely large black hole, on the order of hundreds of thousands to billions of solar masses (M ☉), and is theorized to exist in the center of almost all massive galaxies.
29 Μαρ 2023 · Astronomers call the cosmic monster an ultramassive black hole, as opposed to the usual galactic supermassive black holes that weigh anywhere between a few million to a few billion solar...
2 Αυγ 2019 · TON 618 is the largest black hole in the known universe. In fact, it’s so large that it has pioneered the classification of “Ultramassive black hole,” and puts forth a lumosity equal to 140 trillion of our suns!
20 Φεβ 2024 · New research that was published in the journal Nature Astronomy on Monday lays out the discovery of a distant quasar containing what scientists say is the fastest-growing black hole ever recorded.
As a quasar, TON 618 is believed to be the active galactic nucleus at the center of a galaxy, the engine of which is a supermassive black hole feeding on intensely hot gas and matter in an accretion disc. Given its observed redshift of 2.219, the light travel time of TON 618 is estimated to be approximately 10.8 billion years.
30 Δεκ 2022 · The largest black hole ever discovered is located within a galaxy cluster known as the Phoenix Cluster, located around 8.5-billion light years away. The Phoenix Cluster is one of the most intensely studied galaxy clusters in our universe.
This list of black holes (and stars considered probable candidates) is organized by mass (including black holes of undetermined mass); some items in this list are galaxies or star clusters that are believed to be organized around a black hole.
