The Bhagavad Gita (/ ˈbʌɡəvədˈɡiːtɑː /; [ 1 ] Sanskrit: भगवद्गीता, IPA: [ˌbʱɐɡɐʋɐd ˈɡiːtɑː], romanized:bhagavad-gītā, lit. 'god's Song'), [ a ] often referred to as the Gita (IAST: gītā), is a Hindu scripture, dated to the second or first century BCE, [ 7 ] which forms part of the Epic Mahabharata.
The metrical text is in Sanskrit, is dated to the 1st to 3rd century CE, and presents itself as a discourse given by Manu (Svayambhuva) and Bhrigu on dharma topics such as duties, rights, laws, conduct, virtues and others. The text's influence had historically spread outside India.
The Bhagavad Gītā (Gītā) occurs at the start of the sixth book of the Mahābhārata —one of South Asia’s two main epics. Like the Rāmāyaṇa, it depicts the god Viṣṇu in avatāra form. In the Rāmāyaṇa, he was Rāma; in the Mahābhārata he is Kṛṣṇa.
