As previously discussed, force is a vector; it has both magnitude and direction. The SI unit of force is called the newton (abbreviated N), and 1 N is the force needed to accelerate an object with a mass of 1 kg at a rate of 1m/s2 1 m/s 2: 1N = 1kg ⋅m/s2. 1 N = 1 kg · m/s 2.
Newton's 2nd law of motion states that acceleration is directly proportional to net force and inversely proportional to mass. The result is the equation ∑F=ma.
From the equation, we see that the impulse equals the average net external force multiplied by the time this force acts. It is equal to the change in momentum. The effect of a force on an object depends on how long it acts, as well as the strength of the force.
