Chemistry is the branch of science which studies matter—its composition, prop-erties, and changes. Scientists attempt to discover and describe matter, then deter-mine why these kinds of matter have particular characteristics and why changes in this matter occur.

subdisciplines (organic chemistry, biochemistry, and nuclear chemistry), and to explore several topics relevant to everyday life in which chemistry is important.
Effect of temperature on reaction rate: Increasing the temperature means the particles will have more kinetic energy and so will move faster. If the molecules are moving faster they will collide more often and, since they’ve gained kinetic energy, a larger proportion of the particles will have at least the activation energy.
Matter exists normally in three states - gas (g), liquid (l) or solid (s). Phase: A particular state of matter [e.g. gas, liquid, solid]. Phase change: The change which occurs when a substance changes from one state to another, or undergoes a change in structure in the solid state. The common names for phase changes are:
The Royal Society of Chemistry's interactive periodic table features history, alchemy, podcasts, videos, and data trends across the periodic table. Click the tabs at the top to explore each section.
This book introduces chemistry to beginners. It does this “progressively”, that is, the presentation moves logically from experimental observations to theory.
