Three basic tidal patterns occur along the Earth’s major shorelines. In general, most areas have two high tides and two low tides each day. When the two highs and the two lows are about the same height, the pattern is called a semi-daily or semidiurnal tide.
When you see the tide roll in or out, what you’re really seeing is a cycle of small changes to the distribution of our planet’s oceans. As the Moon’s gravity tugs at Earth, it shifts Earth’s mass, distorting its shape ever so slightly into that of a football ― elongated at the equator and shortened at the poles.
Four stages in the tidal cycle are named: The water stops falling, reaching a local minimum called low tide. Sea level rises over several hours, covering the intertidal zone; flood tide. The water stops rising, reaching a local maximum called high tide. Sea level falls over several hours, revealing the intertidal zone; ebb tide.
The combined gravitational force of the Moon and the Sun causes the tides in Earth's oceans. There are 2 high tides and 2 low tides about every 24 hours.

The tidal force causes Earth—and its water—to bulge out on the side closest to the moon and the side farthest from the moon. These bulges of water are high tides.
What are tides? Tides are the short term periodic rise and fall of the world’s oceans. They result from the gravitational interaction between the Earth, the moon and to a lesser extent, the sun. Different parts of the world experience different tidal regimes.
