Not to be confused with uridine. Uracil (/ ˈjʊərəsɪl /) (symbol U or Ura) is one of the four nucleotide bases in the nucleic acid RNA. The others are adenine (A), cytosine (C), and guanine (G). In RNA, uracil binds to adenine via two hydrogen bonds. In DNA, the uracil nucleobase is replaced by thymine (T). Uracil is a demethylated form of thymine.
Uracil is one of four nitrogenous bases found in the RNA molecule: uracil and cytosine (derived from pyrimidine) and adenine and guanine (derived from purine). Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) also contains each of these nitrogenous bases, except that thymine is substituted for uracil.

As a pyrimidine nucleotide it has an amino acid group at the 2′ position and a carboxy group at the 5′ position. U and T are equivalent in their information storage, transmission and their base pairing with adenine.
