Uracil is a pyrimidine that is structurally similar to the thymine, another pyrimidine that is found in DNA. Like thymine, uracil can base-pair with adenine (Figure 2).
Uracil is only found in RNA and not in DNA. It forms two hydrogen bonds with adenine during RNA synthesis. Uracil is a pyrimidine, similar to cytosine and thymine. The presence of uracil instead of thymine helps distinguish RNA from DNA in cells.
Not to be confused with uridine. Uracil (/ ˈjʊərəsɪl /) (symbol U or Ura) is one of the four nucleotide bases in the nucleic acid RNA. The others are adenine (A), cytosine (C), and guanine (G). In RNA, uracil binds to adenine via two hydrogen bonds. In DNA, the uracil nucleobase is replaced by thymine (T). Uracil is a demethylated form of thymine.
