Wrought iron, one of the two forms in which iron is obtained by smelting; the other is cast iron (q.v.). Wrought iron is a soft, ductile, fibrous variety that is produced from a semifused mass of relatively pure iron globules partially surrounded by slag.
Wrought iron is an iron alloy with a very low carbon content (less than 0.05%) in contrast to that of cast iron (2.1% to 4.5%). It is a semi-fused mass of iron with fibrous slag inclusions (up to 2% by weight), which give it a wood-like "grain" that is visible when it is etched, rusted, or bent to failure.
Wrought iron is formed from repeatedly heating cast iron. This process gives wrought iron its laminar structure, making it a costly material. It has a far higher tensile strength and is more ductile than cast iron. Instead of pure iron, engineers use wrought iron to protect against rust.
