The Castello Plan, a 1660 map of New Amsterdam (the top right corner is roughly north). The fort gave The Battery (in present-day Manhattan) its name, the large street going from the fort past the wall became Broadway, and the city wall (right) gave Wall Street its name.

6 Αυγ 2024 · The Dutch capitulated, and New Amsterdam got renamed New York in 1665, after the Duke of York. During the Third Anglo-Dutch War in 1673, the Dutch managed to occupy the city again and renamed it New Orange.
The so-called Castello Plan--a map drawn up in 1660--gives us an excellent picture of what New Amsterdam was like at its height, just four years before the English took over and renamed it New York. Most of the individual houses indicated on the map can be identified with their owners.
