Rococo was a style of art, especially architecture and decorative art that originated in France. It is marked by elaborate ornamentation with a profusion of scrolls, foliage, and animal forms. Its main period was from the late 1720s to the late 1780s. The French Revolution in 1789 ended Rococo.
The Rococo first emerged in France during the 1720s and 30s as a style developed by craftspeople and designers rather than architects, which explains why it is found primarily in furniture, silver and ceramics.
Around 1740 the Rococo style began to be employed in British furniture, most notably in the designs of Thomas Chippendale. His catalogue Gentleman's and Cabinet-makers' directory (1754), illustrating Rococo designs, became a popular industry standard.
By the end of the 19th century, the French Rococo was fully recovered and established as a national cultural heritage of France, along with the rehabilitation of the decorative arts in general.
