Land breeze, a local wind system characterized by a flow from land to water late at night. Land breezes alternate with sea breezes along coastlines adjacent to large bodies of water. Both are induced by differences that occur between the heating or cooling of the water surface and the adjacent land surface.

15 Μαΐ 2018 · A land breeze is a local wind that blows offshore (from the land to the sea) during nighttime and early morning hours before sunrise, along with the coasts of large water bodies. The land normally cools off faster than the sea surface which makes the sea warmer than the adjacent land.
When Does Land Breeze Occur? Land breeze occurs late at night due to the differences in the heating or cooling capacity of the surface of the water and the adjacent land surface. In autumn and winter, land breezes are most common because of the cooler nights.
Thermal Circulations: Sea and Land Breezes • Uneven heating of land and water • Diurnal wind coming from sea (‘sea breeze’) during daytime and from land (‘land breeze’) at night • Why is the land breeze weaker than the sea breeze? Fig. 7.4: Development of a sea breeze and a land breeze
Land breezes occur at night and in the early morning, when the land is cooler than the sea. This is because as the air cools in the night time (as there is less heating from the sun) it contracts. Pressure is higher over the land than the sea.
Land breezes can occur when the land’s nighttime temperature is less than the sea surface temperature. They are most common during the fall and winter seasons when water temperatures are still fairly warm and nights are cool. However, unlike the sea breeze, the land breeze is usually weaker.
Land and Sea Breezes: Land and sea breezes are local winds that occur due to the differential heating of land and sea. Land Breeze: At night, the land cools faster than the sea. The cooler air over the land descends and creates an area of high pressure.
