The Acropolis Museum (Greek: Μουσείο Ακρόπολης, Mouseio Akropolis) is an archaeological museum focused on the findings of the archaeological site of the Acropolis of Athens. The museum was built to house every artifact found on the rock and on the surrounding slopes, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece .
The new Acropolis Museum was constructed on the south side of the Acropolis at a distance of 300 metres from its monuments. The Museum’s foundations were completed on the 30th of January 2004 and its opening took place on the 20th of June 2009.
History: The construction of the Acropolis began in the 5th century BCE. It took place during the Golden Age of Athens. Pericles led the way. The main purpose of the Acropolis was religious and civic. It served as a sanctuary and a symbol of Athenian power and culture.
