The Acropolis Museum (Greek: Μουσείο Ακρόπολης, Mouseio Akropolis) is an archaeological museum focused on the findings of the archaeological site of the Acropolis of Athens. The museum was built to house every artifact found on the rock and on the surrounding slopes, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece .
The new Acropolis Museum was constructed on the south side of the Acropolis at a distance of 300 metres from its monuments. The Museum’s foundations were completed on the 30th of January 2004 and its opening took place on the 20th of June 2009.
The original Acropolis Museum was founded in 1865 and opened in a building on the archaeological site in 1874. To accommodate the growing collection of discoveries, the museum constructed an additional building in 1888 and another after World War II .
The state-of-the-art Acropolis Museum in Athens has the capacity to house them all in optimal conditions, in direct view of the monument. In 1801, Elgin, the British Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, removed sculptures from the buildings of the Acropolis of Athens without permission from the Sultan.
During the Golden Age of Athens, Pericles spearheaded ambitious construction projects that resulted in the creation of the Parthenon, Propylaea, and Erechtheion, transforming the Acropolis into a monumental representation of classical Greek architecture and culture.
8 Οκτ 2015 · The temple was designed by the architects Iktinos and Kallikrates, after Pericles in 447 BC launched an unprecedented construction program in order to build a new temple dedicated to Athena, opposite the entrance to the Acropolis sanctuary, in commemoration of the city’s victory in the Persian Wars.
