The Acropolis Museum (Greek: Μουσείο Ακρόπολης, Mouseio Akropolis) is an archaeological museum focused on the findings of the archaeological site of the Acropolis of Athens. The museum was built to house every artifact found on the rock and on the surrounding slopes, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece .
The new Acropolis Museum was constructed on the south side of the Acropolis at a distance of 300 metres from its monuments. The Museum’s foundations were completed on the 30th of January 2004 and its opening took place on the 20th of June 2009.
The Acropolis Museum was built in large part to house the so-called Elgin Marbles, a collection of ancient Greek sculptures that were removed from the Parthenon in the 19th century by Thomas Bruce, 7th earl of Elgin, who was the British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire (1799–1803).

The buildings. The antiquities visible to present-day visitors to the Museum’s excavation site belong to the impressive Building Z, founded around the mid-5th cent. AD, and to its new wing, Building E, erected at the beginning of the next century.
The Acropolis Museum was built between 2002 and 2007. It officially opened on June 20, 2009.
