For Marvel Comics, continuity is pretty simple. There is a multiverse, each universe is labeled as “Earth-Number”, so there is an Earth-1 and an Earth-2 and an Earth-19999. The main continuity takes place on Earth 616. Every alternate timeline is actually an alternate universe, there is no changing the past.
To know if they are canon or not, most often you can look if it has a Vertigo, an Elseword, a Black Label, or a Mature Reader, logo - If so, it's not canon, otherwise it 90% is. Batman has 3-4 timelines: Comics are published at one issue per month, aka 1 chapter per month.
The youngster meets Batman on a dark street, but before he can update Batman, the thug that followed the teen attacks Batman from behind and knocks him unconscious. Batman soon wakes up, surrounded by Strange's thugs and the Professor himself.
Even Batman has dwindled in interest since the end of Tynion's run, and that's something which I'd thought impossible. The reason I've seen a lot of people express for this is the result of continuity. Since Death Metal, DC has essentially thrown up their hands and given a vague handwave explanation of "everything being canon".
