California is a borough on the Monongahela River in Washington County, Pennsylvania, United States.The population was 5,479 as of the 2020 census. [4] It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. [5] Founded in 1849, the borough was named for the territory of California following the gold rush. [6] It is the home of Pennsylvania Western University, California.
The current Borough of California is actually made up of two separate communities. In 1953, California Borough and East Pike Run Township merged, leaving only California Borough. Founded in 1852, California is also home to California University of Pennsylvania, a nationally accredited institution.
