South Mountains State Park is a North Carolina state park in Burke County, North Carolina in the United States. Located near Connellys Springs, North Carolina, it covers 20,949 acres (84.78 km 2) [1] and includes part of the South Mountains, a branch of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Located in Burke County 55 miles east of Asheville, South Mountains State Park is situated at the crossroads of the Appalachian Mountains and the Foothills to provide the ultimate backcountry experience. The park boasts elevations up to 3,000 feet, an 80-foot waterfall, and nearly 50 miles of trail for hikers, horseback riders, and mountain bikers.
The South Mountains are an ancient and deeply eroded mountain range in western North Carolina. They are an isolated remnant of the much larger Appalachian Mountains to the west, and are separated from the Appalachians by the Catawba River valley.
The South Mountains, carved out of the Blue Ridge by erosion, are a broad belt of peaks and knobs rising abruptly from a deep valley. These steep, rugged mountains encompass 100,000 acres in Burke, Cleveland and Rutherford counties.
Located between Asheville and Charlotte in North Carolina, USA, South Mountains State Park lies just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. These low mountains with their miles of trails and streams invite hikers, bikers, riders, and fishers to enjoy some of the state’s undeveloped forest.
South Mountains State Park is under long-term closure until further notice. The park sustained a lot of trail damage due to Hurricane Helene. Please do not attempt to enter the park, even on foot, as conditions are unsafe.
8 Αυγ 2019 · Where Is South Mountains State Park? South Mountains is located in Connelly Springs, about 20 miles south of Morganton in Burke County. Most people get there off of I-40, and you are traveling about 20-25 minutes off of the interstate.
