Mayan Clothing for Women. Mayan clothing for women often included a skirt which was worn with or without a sleeveless, a poncho-like tunic which today is known as “huipil”. The skirts could be either tied with a belt or knotted in place with the “huipil” worn over the skirt.
Indigena Imports specializes in the finest traditional Maya textiles - all hand-woven, individually produced and previously worn. Our objective is to collect, conserve, exhibit, and sell the best examples available.
We work directly with 100 women from 17 weaving co-operations across 6 regions in the western highlands of Guatemala; Sololá, Huehuetenango, Sacatepéquez, Quetzaltenango, Chimaltenango and Quiché. Pronounced wē-pēel, these intricately embroidered blouses are an integral part of traditional Guatemalan women's attire. Paired with woven skirts and fastened with a faja (fah-hah) sash, each Huipil is a masterpiece that weaves together ancient Mayan techniques in weaving, dyeing, and needlework.
