Sir Humphry Davy was arguably Britain's leading chemist of the early 19th century. He was particularly noted for applying electrolysis to break down compounds into their component forms and in this way isolated, for the first time, samples of sodium, potassium and other reactive elements.
In 1886, French chemist Henri Moissan, later a Nobel Prize winner, succeeded in making elemental fluorine by electrolyzing a mixture of potassium fluoride and hydrogen fluoride. Large-scale production and use of fluorine began during World War 2 as part of the Manhattan Project .

Moissan is credited with over three hundred publications, his greatest works being Le Four Électrique (The electric-arc furnace) (1897), Le Fluor et ses Composés (Fluorine and its compounds) (1900) and Traité de Chimie Minerale (Treatise on inorganic chemistry) (five volumes 1904-1906).
These brave scientists were battling to be the first to isolate elemental fluorine (F 2) from its various compounds, using electrolysis. However, it was Nicklès' countrymen, Henri Moissan, who succeeded in 1886.
