It is named after Ernest Lawrence, inventor of the cyclotron, a device that was used to discover many artificial radioactive elements. A radioactive metal, lawrencium is the eleventh transuranium element, the third transfermium, and the last member of the actinide series.
Lawrencium (Lr), synthetic chemical element, the 14th member of the actinoid series of the periodic table, atomic number 103. Not occurring in nature, lawrencium (probably as the isotope lawrencium-257) was first produced (1961) by chemists Albert Ghiorso, T. Sikkeland, A.E. Larsh, and R.M. Latimer.
The element is named after Ernest Lawrence, who invented the cyclotron particle accelerator. This was designed to accelerate sub-atomic particles around a circle until they have enough energy to smash into an atom and create a new atom.
Chemical element number 103 was named lawrencium in his honor after its discovery at Berkeley in 1961.
The element is named for Ernest O. Lawrence (Fig. IUPAC.103.2), who developed the cyclotron. The chemical symbol for lawrencium was originally proposed as Lw.
In 1961, a team of physicist working at Berkeley, Almon Larsh, Torbjorn Sikkeland, Albert Ghiorso and Robert Latimer synthesized an atom of lawrencium by bombarding californium target with boron nuclie.
Ghiorso et al. suggested the name Lawrencium and the chemical symbol Lw (later was chosen for Lr) for element #103 in honor of E.O. Lawrence, the inventor of the cyclotron and founder of the Radiation Laboratory at Berkeley where so much of the transuranium research has been carried out.
