16 Οκτ 2024 · James Chadwick (born October 20, 1891, Manchester, England—died July 24, 1974, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire) was an English physicist who received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1935 for the discovery of the neutron.
Some neutron stars emit beams of electromagnetic radiation that make them detectable as pulsars, and the discovery of pulsars by Jocelyn Bell Burnell and Antony Hewish in 1967 was the first observational suggestion that neutron stars exist.
23 Οκτ 2024 · Ernest Rutherford, British physicist who discovered that the atom is mostly empty space surrounding a massive nucleus and who did many pioneering experiments with radioactivity. He was also known for predicting the existence of the neutron and calculating Avogadro’s number.
Through his inventive experimental work Rutherford made many new discoveries in both radioactivity and nuclear physics. Ernest Rutherford (1871–1937) postulated the nuclear structure of the atom, discovered alpha and beta rays, and proposed the laws of radioactive decay.
29 Ιουλ 2023 · Explain the research method that led to the discovery of neutron stars, located hundreds or thousands of light-years away. Describe the features of a neutron star that allow it to be detected as a pulsar. List the observational evidence that links pulsars and neutron stars to supernovae.
1932 Chadwick discovers the neutron. 1934 Baade & Zwicky predict the existence of neutron stars (NSs) as the end products of supernovae. 1939 Oppenheimer and Volko predict the upper mass limit of NS. 1964 Hoyle, Narlikar and Wheeler predict NSs rapidly rotate.
We begin with statements of fact and discuss the evidence that convinced astronomers that the Sun is fusing hydrogen, that low-mass stars produce heavy elements through neutron capture, that massive stars can explode as supernovae and that supernovae of all types produce new elements.
