On June 4th, 1989, the Chinese government ordered a brutal crackdown, deploying troops and tanks to suppress the demonstrations forcibly. The violent crackdown resulted in the loss of hundreds, possibly thousands, of lives and left an indelible mark on Chinese history and collective memory.
After weeks of unsuccessful attempts between the demonstrators and the Chinese government to find a peaceful resolution, the Chinese government declared martial law on the night of 3 June and deployed troops to occupy the square in what is referred to as the Tiananmen Square massacre.
