Dole served as a Kansas state legislator before running for Congress in 1960, joining the House for eight years then going on to win the Senate seat. Dole was early in his career seen as a GOP “hatchet man.”

Dole was instrumental in Representative Gerald Ford’s election as House Minority Leader early in 1965. At the same time, he established an enduring relationship with future president Richard Nixon. In 1968, Dole was elected to the U.S. Senate, succeeding Frank Carlson (KS-R).
