Following a period as Russell County, Kansas Attorney, he won election to the House of Representatives in 1960. In 1968, Dole was elected to the Senate, where he served as chairman of the Republican National Committee from 1971 to 1973 and chairman of the Senate Finance Committee from 1981 to 1985.

In 1984, Dole succeeded his friend Howard Baker (TN-R), as Senate Majority Leader. Elected six times by his colleagues, Dole would serve as Republican leader (Majority and Minority Leader) for twelve years, under three Presidents: Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Clinton.
Representing Kansas in the House for eight years and the Senate for more than 27 years, Bob Dole was known as a strong partisan debater and tough negotiator who also excelled at forging bipartisan alliances to enact legislation.
Dole served as county attorney before running for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1960. He spent eight years in the House and then was elected to the Senate in 1968. Sharp in debate, Dole also served as chairman of the Republican National Committee from 1971 to 1972.
