Representing Kansas in the House for eight years and the Senate for more than 27 years, Bob Dole was known as a strong partisan debater and tough negotiator who also excelled at forging bipartisan alliances to enact legislation.

Bob Dole served in Congress for 36 years. He was the longest-serving Republican leader in the history of the Senate (1985-1996) until this record was broken in 2018. Dole was also the 1996 Republican nominee for president, and former President Gerald Ford’s vice presidential candidate in 1976.
