In fact, Cooper made the first call on a portable cell phone in April 1973 to his rival, Joel Engel, who served as Bell Labs head of research.
American engineer Martin Cooper is widely regarded as the father of the cellular phone. He led the team that in 1972–73 built the first mobile cell phone. From this phone, Cooper made the world’s first cell-phone call. Cooper was born on December 26, 1928, in Chicago, Illinois.
