Among the groups reporting to Shugart was the team that invented the floppy disk. Shugart joined Memorex in 1969 as Vice President of its Equipment Division and led the development of its 3660 (compatible with IBM 2314) and 3670 (compatible with IBM 3330) disk storage subsystems.
Floppy disks were an almost universal data format from the 1970s into the 1990s, used for primary data storage as well as for backup and data transfers between computers. In 1967, at an IBM facility in San Jose, California, work began on a drive that led to the world's first floppy disk and disk drive. [1]
Invented by IBM engineers led by Alan Shugart, the first disks were designed for loading microcodes into the controller of the Merlin (IBM 3330) disk pack file, a 100 MB storage device. So, in effect, the first floppies were used to fill another type of data storage device.
Since the paper was 'floppy' material, he claims he had invented the floppy disk (sometimes he uses the phrase "floppy media"); however, flexible magnetic recording media was well known prior to 1952, in tape and wire recording.
A floppy disk, often referred to simply as a “floppy,” is a magnetic storage device widely used for data storage and transfer from the 1970s through the early 2000s. It consists of a thin, flexible plastic disk coated with a magnetic material enclosed in a square or rectangular protective shell.
19 Ιουλ 2021 · Fifty years ago, IBM introduced the first-ever floppy disk drive, the IBM 23FD, and the first floppy disks. Floppies made punched cards obsolete, and its successors ruled software distribution for the next 20 years. Here's a look at how and why the floppy disk became an icon.
floppy disk, magnetic storage medium used with late 20th-century computers. Floppy disks were popular from the 1970s until the late 1990s, when they were supplanted by the increasing use of e-mail attachments and other means to transfer files from computer to computer.
