McCann, who, according to Popular Science was the "recognized leader of the ship model building hobby" of his time founded the Ship Model Makers′ Club in 1929, with him as secretary and treasurer and marine artist and fellow ship model builder Gordon Grant as president.

Ships are complex artifacts, conceived and built to operate between two environments – water and air – with different viscosities, weights, and dynamics. To understand the evolution of shipbuilding we must use written documents, iconography, and archaeological remains.
It is the oldest ship model in Europe, dating back more than six centuries. And it has been made extremely accurately. The Mataró model means much the same to the Maritime Museum as Rembrandt’s Nightwatch does to the Rijksmuseum.
Ship model makers and materials 1660–1815. Models of Royal Navy ships were made by order of the Navy Board. Little is known about the men who built these models but, thanks to their surviving works, we know how their models were made.
The earliest known depictions (including paintings and models) of shallow-water sailing boats is from the 6th to 5th millennium BC of the Ubaid period of Mesopotamia. They were made from bundled reeds coated in bitumen and had bipod masts.
The earliest objects date from the 17th and 18th century, such as the more than four-metre long model of the William Rex, a ship of the line from 1698, and several models of Dutch East Indiamen. The Department of the Navy transferred almost its entire model collection to Rijksmuseum during the 1880s.
