The map also places prisons in context by indicating county-level population data.

JailVizNYC is an interactive dashboard that allows people to easily filter the data, view population trends, and explore the charges holding people in jail. It can help identify where reforms are needed at arrest or arraignment and during case processing or sentencing to reduce the jail population.

Since January 2022, at least twenty-six people have died in custody in New York City’s jails, underscoring the persistent dysfunction and violence of the jail system and accelerating calls for more oversight of jail operations.
