If the word choice is the subject of a verb, then who is the correct choice. However, if the word choice is not the subject of a verb, then whom is the correct choice. Keeping these facts in mind, you may find the following procedures helpful. 1. Look at the words after the word choice.
Whomever vs. Whoever: Choose the Right Word. Whoever is used to mean “whatever person” or “no matter who”: “Whoever arrives first should open the windows.”. According to most English teachers, it should only be used in the subject position—that is, in the position of they in “They arrived first.”.
There are two main rules: 1) Use whoever or whomever to agree with the verb in the dependent clause, regardless of the rest of the sentence. 2) When the whoever/whomever clause is the subject of the following verb, look inside the clause to determine whether to use whoever or whomever.
Whatever, Whenever, Wherever and Whoever are used to show that something does not matter. For example: “You should do whatever you can to fix the problem.” “I will clean my room whenever I have time.” Wherever you decide to go, call me and let me know.” You can bring whoever you like to the party.”
Whoever vs. Whomever. To determine whether to use whoever or whomever, the they/them rule in the Who/Whom section applies: they = whoever. them = whomever. Rule 1. The presence of whoever or whomever indicates a dependent clause. Use whoever or whomever to agree with the verb in that dependent clause, regardless of the rest of the sentence.
