19 Μαρ 2024 · During the spring migration, whooping cranes mingle with hundreds of thousands of migrating sandhill cranes on Nebraska’s Platte River.
Each year, the whooping crane (Grus americana) migrates over 2,400 miles from their summer breeding grounds in the north to their wintering grounds in the south, and travels on the same route in the spring back to their breeding grounds.

3 Ιαν 2022 · The whooping crane was one of the first species to gain protection under the Endangered Species Act in 1970. The migratory population that passes through Nebraska twice each year had dipped to just 18 individuals in 1945, decimated by hunting and the loss of nesting habitat.
While migrating through Nebraska, whooping cranes use the central Platte, Middle Loup, North Loup and Niobrara rivers and a variety of wetland habitats as stopover sites during both spring and fall migration.
