Fyke, or box, nets are set right at ice-out to capture primarily walleyes, but the Wisconsin DNR crews handle all species found in the nets. As the water warms, the crews then shift the fyke nets to muskie spawning sites on the same lake.
Cedar Lake was surveyed in the spring of 2021 using fyke nets and electrofishing gear to assess the status of the current fish community. Immediately after ice out on March 30th, 12 fyke nets (3x6 ft, 0.75 inch mesh and 4x6 ft, 0.5 inch nylon mesh) were set targeting Walleye, Muskellunge and Northern Pike.
Fish Regulations and Habitat. Regulations: Smallmouth bass 18 inch minimum – 1 bag limit and Muskie 50 inch minimum – 1 bag limit. This was just submitted this spring and will need to go through DNR approvals, spring hearings, and legislature before they would become new regulations.
