This History is written for two audiences: those who know a few landmark texts of English literature but little of the surrounding country; and those who simply want to read its long story from its origins to the present day.
English literature is literature written in the English language from the English-speaking world. The English language has developed over more than 1,400 years. [1] The earliest forms of English, a set of Anglo-Frisian dialects brought to Great Britain by Anglo-Saxon settlers in the fifth century, are called Old English.

The term ‘English literature’ refers to the body of written works produced in the English language by inhabitants of the British Isles from the 7th century to the present, ranging from drama, poetry, and fiction to autobiography and historical writing.
